In the Western Balkans, the EU and its members should work together to accelerate reforms, especially in the rule of law, as well as for inclusive regional cooperation and sustainable economic recovery so that the region remains firmly on the strategic European path, according to the working document for the meeting of EU diplomats to be held this month.
In the document, which the Beta agency had access to, it is emphasized that the integration of the Western Balkans into the political, security and economic interests of the EU represents a geostrategic investment in a stable and advanced Union.
In the document "Non paper: Increased engagement of the EU in the Western Balkans" that the EU External Affairs Service (EEAS) forwarded for the meeting, it is stated that the ongoing process of the European integration of Serbia and Montenegro should be accelerated.
It also says that the two countries must "increase the dynamism of their reform program, especially in terms of the rule of law and administration, and consolidate their geopolitical orientation."
It goes on to say that Serbia and Kosovo, with both governments now having solid support from the electorate, should seize the opportunity to reach a comprehensive agreement on normalization as there is no time to lose. It is also stated that urgent progress is needed regarding visa liberalization for Kosovo.
For Bosnia and Herzegovina, it is written that progress on the matter of 14 priorities from the Opinion of the European Commission is essential for that country to "move" from Dayton to Brussels. When it comes to Albania and North Macedonia, it is stated that the process of accession to the EU provided a strong impetus to reforms and thus to democracy, stability and prosperity, and that accession negotiations with these countries should now begin as soon as possible.
